‘Please Look After My Two Children’

  • Bank Official’s Body Found Hanging in Chattogram

Police have recovered the hanging body of an assistant manager of Janata Bank in the city. The body of the banker, Mr. Mohammad Abul Hossain (46), was recovered from his own residence in Block A, Halishahar, yesterday, Monday morning. Abul Hossain’s home was in Sarikait union, Sandwip. He was in charge of the loan section at Janata Bank’s Muradpur branch. Police believe he took his own life due to work-related pressure and depression.

A suicide note was recovered beside the body. In the note, Abul Hossain mentioned pressure related to the bank’s loan disbursement, anxiety over a legal case, and his own financial crisis. He wrote that no one was responsible for his death, asked for everyone’s forgiveness, and asked that his wife and two children be looked after.

Halishahar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mr. Mohammad Zainal Abedin Mondol said police recovered the bank official’s hanging body from his residence after receiving the news, and that it initially appears to be a suicide. A note was found beside the body, and it has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

In the note found beside the body, he wrote about facing various kinds of pressure since taking charge of the Muradpur branch — issues over approving or denying loans, files, and more. He also wrote that he had fallen into financial crisis due to unpaid business dues and money owed to him by others not being recovered, and that amid this crisis, he had been forced to sell the only flat, which was registered in his wife’s name, on August 4.

The note also referenced a loan disbursement from 2021, noting that in connection with that disbursement, a CR case had been filed against him and three other colleagues in his capacity as the then-manager of the Laldighi branch. He wrote that he was completely innocent and blameless, and that this worry had kept him from sleeping for the past two weeks. Writing about his wife, Abul Hossain said he considered himself fortunate to have such a loving and caring wife. One of his two children is in sixth grade; the other is also with the family. It may be noted that previously, a former bank official in the city’s Halishahar area had died by suicide by shooting himself in the head with a pistol.
