Two Former Army Chiefs Among 13 Ex-Military Officers Under ACC Investigation

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is set to question former Army Chief General (retd) SM Shafiuddin Ahmed on October 14. The commission had earlier issued a notice asking him to appear before it. According to the notice, he was scheduled to face questioning on September 14.

However, he sought 30 days’ time on that day. The ACC’s inquiry-related officials later said he would be questioned on a date in October. Recent reports also confirm that Shafiuddin sought 30 days’ additional time to appear before the commission. The ACC began its inquiry against Mr. Shafiuddin on December 14, 2025.

Meanwhile, ACC sources said former Army Chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed’s submitted asset declaration is also being verified by the commission. The appointment of an inquiry officer for the matter was announced on September 6.

Earlier, the ACC sent a notice to Aziz Ahmed at his last known address at House No. 1320, Road No. 19, Emelia-2, Mirpur DOHS, Pallabi, Dhaka-1216, asking him to submit a statement of his assets. He subsequently submitted the declaration.

An inquiry officer has been appointed to verify and investigate the specific information and data mentioned in the submitted declaration. The asset declarations submitted by Aziz Ahmed and his wife, Dilshad Nahar Kakoli, are also being verified.

The allegations of laundering money to Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai through banks and hundi and using the money to purchase businesses and properties are also under investigation.

11 More Former Military Officers Under Investigation

Besides the two former Army chiefs, the ACC is investigating allegations of corruption, illegal wealth accumulation, abuse of power and money laundering involving 11 other military officers allegedly linked to enforced disappearances and killings. The ACC has already filed cases against some of them. During the investigation process, their bank accounts have been frozen, properties seized and travel bans imposed.

The officers on the list include former Air Chief Marshal Sheikh Abdul Hannan; former Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), dismissed Major General Ziaul Ahsan; former Director General of the National Security Intelligence (NSI), Major General TM Zobayer; former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Major General (retd) Hamidul Haque; retired Lieutenant General Saiful Alam; Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled; former Special Security Force (SSF) chief Lieutenant General (retd) Md Mujibur Rahman; former Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) chief Major General (retd) Md Shafinul Islam; former RAJUK chairman Major General (retd) M Siddiqur Rahman Sarkar; Major General (retd) Salahuddin Miaji; and Lieutenant General (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury.

The ACC has previously taken action against several former senior military officials, including through asset seizures and travel restrictions, as part of inquiries into alleged corruption, illicit wealth and money laundering.

Cases Filed Against Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Mamun Khaled

Among them, two separate cases have been filed against former SSF chief Mujibur Rahman and his wife Tasrin Mujib over allegations of acquiring assets beyond their known sources of income. The allegations involve Tk 2.71 crore in assets against Mujibur Rahman and Tk 7.52 crore against his wife.

Three separate cases have also been filed against Sheikh Mamun Khaled over allegations of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 1.95 crore. Separate cases were filed against his wife Nigar Sultana and brother-in-law Aminur Rahman over allegations involving Tk 8 crore 4 lakh 59 thousand in illegal assets.

ACC Investigations After August 5, 2024

The ACC began investigating these military officers after Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5, 2024. The previous commission filed cases against them. The commission headed by Justice AKM Asaduzzaman is now preparing to submit charge sheets against them. ACC Secretary Saidur Rahman Khan said the commission is working to complete the ongoing investigations against the former military officials as quickly as possible.
