Government to Equip Infertility Care with Modern Technology and Skilled Doctors: Health Minister
Efforts will be initiated promptly to install modern equipment at the Infertility Center of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) to ensure state-of-the-art care, announced Health and Family Welfare Minister Mr. Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain today. Speaking as the chief guest at a scientific seminar organized by DMCH’s Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Unit for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month, he pledged to secure funding in the upcoming national budget for this initiative. He also emphasized the necessity of providing specialized training to local physicians to cultivate world-class expertise in infertility treatment across Bangladesh.
Highlighting that delivering quality healthcare for all remains a primary government mandate, the Health Minister underscored that infertility management is an essential health service. ‘Couples unable to conceive often face societal stigma and mental harassment, despite effective solutions being available through modern medicine,’ he noted, asserting that expanding domestic care facilities is an urgent necessity. He further noted that achieving even an 80 percent success rate in domestic infertility care would mark a transformative milestone for the nation’s healthcare system, reassuring medical professionals of his full institutional support.
Addressing the persistent trend of patients seeking medical care abroad, the Health Minister called for immediate measures to prevent unnecessary foreign currency outflow. He stated that despite the country possessing exceptionally talented and competent doctors, many patients continue traveling to nations like India and Thailand for specialized procedures. To restore public confidence in local clinical standards, he announced that targeted health awareness initiatives and promotional campaigns will be intensified at both the district and rural levels to encourage couples to seek advanced modern treatments within the country.
The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. Musarat Sultana and featured introductory remarks presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Uma Nag Shampa. The event was attended by several key health officials serving as special guests, including Dr. A N M Bazlur Rashid, Secretary of the Health Services Division; Dr. Prabhat Chandra Biswas, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS); Dr. Md. Mazharul Shaheen, Principal of Dhaka Medical College; and Brigadier General A K M Farhad Hossain, Director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
