Around 10,000 BGB Personnel to Be Deployed Nationwide for Durga Puja

Around 10,000 members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be deployed across the country to ensure security during Sharadiya Durga Puja, the main religious festival of the Hindu community. Lieutenant Colonel Md. Mahbub Murshed Rahman, director (operations) at BGB Headquarters, shared the information on Monday (October 12).

He said around 10,000 BGB personnel would be deployed nationwide from October 16 to 22 as part of the security plan. Mr. Rahman said the BGB had adopted a coordinated security plan to ensure that Durga Puja was celebrated peacefully and in a festive atmosphere. The plan includes regular patrols, intelligence surveillance and close coordination with local administrations, police and puja celebration committees.

He said special attention would be given to identifying potential risks in advance, monitoring rumours and communal incitement, and responding quickly to any untoward incidents. The BGB will provide security support at 2,727 puja mandaps located within eight kilometres of the border and near battalion headquarters. Steps have also been taken to set up temporary camps where necessary to ensure rapid patrols and support in remote and hard-to-reach areas.

Regarding deployment in Dhaka, Mr. Rahman said the scope of BGB duties would be determined based on government directives and the needs of the relevant authorities. The force would remain ready to coordinate with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and local administration to conduct patrols, provide security at key locations and respond quickly to emergencies.

He added that Durga Puja reflects Bangladesh’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony and mutual respect. The BGB would remain fully prepared to ensure that members of the Hindu community could celebrate their religious festival safely, peacefully and joyfully.
