Irregularities Alleged in Selection of Bangladeshi Film For Oscar

Allegations of irregularities, a lack of transparency and the dominance of an influential group have emerged over the selection of Bangladesh’s official entry for the prestigious Academy Awards, widely known as the Oscars. The allegations have sparked dissatisfaction among some film societies and related organisations.
Those concerned have alleged that the Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies has not been conducting the Oscar selection process transparently for a long time. They claim that decisions to send a film representing Bangladesh are made every year without ensuring the opinions and participation of member organisations.
The controversy resurfaced recently following a press conference at a hotel in the capital about selecting Bangladesh’s film for the Oscars. According to the complainants, member film societies, film organisations and clubs affiliated with the federation were not properly informed. This has raised questions about their role in the selection process.
Federation President Barua Manojit Dhiman said transparency, merit and accountability must be ensured when selecting a film to represent Bangladesh in an international competition such as the Oscars. He also said no individual or group should have exclusive control over the process. He called on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to intervene and investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, federation General Secretary Saimon Tarik has also raised allegations concerning the organisation’s activities and leadership. He said the alleged irregularities in the Oscar film selection process would be brought to the attention of the relevant authorities.
People associated with film societies have called for a review of the selection committee’s formation, representation of member organisations, film selection guidelines and financial management. They believe an independent investigation is necessary to establish the truth of the allegations. However, a decision should be made only after examining the statements of all parties concerned.
