BRTA Revises Motorcycle Number Plate Rules for Front Display

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) will now permit motorcycle registration numbers to be displayed on a single horizontal line on the front of vehicles, according to a recently issued gazette notification.
Published on Sunday (November 1), the notification states that Rule 36 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022 has been amended under the powers conferred by Section 122 of the Road Transport Act, 2018.

Under the amended rules, authority is granted to allow single-line front registration numbers alongside existing multi-line formats, as well as multiple dimensions for retro-reflective plates tailored to motorcycle designs.
The revisions also empower the BRTA to specify character dimensions for front number plates, including letter heights, regional and vehicle class identifiers, margin spacing, hyphen lengths, and character spacing.

Additionally, provisions have been made for standard hyphens separating district or region designations and vehicle classifications when registration numbers are displayed on a single line.
The phrase “Motorcycle and” has been omitted from sub-rule (10) of Rule 36, with the amended regulations taking immediate effect.

Issued on October 28 by the BRTA Establishment Branch under the Road Transport and Highways Division, the notification was signed by Deputy Secretary Al-Amin Md. Nurul Islam by order of the President.
