Gas Supply Falls by 491 Million Cubic Feet as Summit LNG Terminal in Maheshkhali Shuts Down for Maintenance

Gas supply to the national grid has dropped by 491 million cubic feet due to the shutdown of Summit’s LNG terminal in Maheshkhali for maintenance work.

The maintenance work began at 8am on Wednesday and is scheduled to continue until 4pm on November 7, Petrobangla had announced earlier.

Against the country’s daily gas demand of around 3,800 million cubic feet, a total of 2,570 million cubic feet of gas from domestic fields and imported LNG had been supplied to the national grid.

Petrobangla had earlier said that the daily gas supply to the national grid could fall from 2,570 million cubic feet to 2,250 million cubic feet during the shutdown of Summit’s LNG terminal. It had also projected that supply from imported LNG could drop from 920 million cubic feet to 600 million cubic feet.

However, after maintenance began at 8am on Wednesday, gas supply to the national grid stood at 2,079 million cubic feet at 10am. Of this, 1,565 million cubic feet came from domestic gas fields and 514 million cubic feet from imported LNG.

This means the total supply at that time was 171 million cubic feet lower than Petrobangla’s forecast.

On Tuesday, Petrobangla dismissed as a rumour social media claims that gas supply across the country would be suspended for four days.

In a press release, the state-owned company said a group was deliberately spreading rumours using photo cards from some media outlets in an attempt to create panic among people.

Petrobangla said gas supply would not be completely suspended anywhere in the country during the maintenance work. However, gas pressure might temporarily remain low in some areas. The company urged people not to be misled by rumours.

There are two floating LNG terminals in Maheshkhali for supplying imported liquefied natural gas to the country. One is operated by Summit Group, while the other is operated by US-based Excelerate Energy.

Summit’s terminal has a daily gas supply capacity of 500 million cubic feet, while Excelerate Energy’s terminal can supply 600 million cubic feet a day. The two terminals have a combined capacity of 1,100 million cubic feet per day.

Gas supply to the national grid has been disrupted before due to problems at LNG terminals in Maheshkhali.

Petrobangla said similar maintenance work was carried out at Summit’s terminal in December 2025.
