Monayem Hossain (48), a member of Ward No. 9 of Vayna Union in Jhenaidah’s Harinakundu upazila and ward president of the activities-banned Awami League, was hacked to death by unidentified assailants.
The attack took place around 9:00pm on Wednesday as he was returning home from Moyenkhali Bazar. The attackers had reportedly been lying in wait behind a primary school in Kalishankarpur village.

Monayem Hossain was the son of Abul Mondal of the same village. After the attack, he was taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment. His body was brought from Kushtia to Harinakundu Police Station around midnight. The body is scheduled to be sent to the Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue on Thursday morning for autopsy.

Police said that when Monayem reached the deserted area behind the school while returning home from the market, the assailants surrounded him and repeatedly hacked him with sharp weapons. One of his hands was almost severed from his body, while he sustained multiple deep wounds to his abdomen and other parts of his body.
He was rescued in critical condition and taken to Kushtia, where doctors declared him dead at around 10:30pm.
Shahin, Masum and Faruk Hossain of Abdalpur village, who were accompanying the victim, said Mr. Monayem Member was returning home normally from the market when he was brutally attacked on the way.

Police suspect that a banned or active extremist group in the area may have been involved in the incident.
The victim’s wife, Shilpi Khatun, has been devastated by the death of her husband. Crying, she said, “My husband was returning home from the market, but he was hacked to death on the way. Today I became a widow, and my children became orphans. I want proper justice for this brutal killing.”

Masum Khan, officer-in-charge of Harinakundu Police Station, said the body was brought to the police station from Kushtia Hospital and would be sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Several police teams have launched operations to identify and arrest those responsible. However, no written case has yet been filed by the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, news of the killing of Awami League leader Monayem Member spread panic across Vayna, Kalishankarpur, Pakhimara and Moyenkhali. The areas remained tense, and additional police have been deployed to maintain the situation under control.
