Surma River Erosion Damages 200 Feet of Embankment in Zakiganj, Homes at Risk

River erosion along the Surma River has damaged about 200 feet of an embankment in the Atgram Naluhati area of Kajalsar Union in Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet. The erosion began around 5:00 am on Thursday (November 5). Nearly half of the embankment has fallen into the river, putting nearby homes at risk.

Local residents said cracks had appeared in the embankment over the past few days. Last night, the cracks became much larger. If the erosion continues, nearby homes, farmland and people’s livelihoods may face serious threats.

Local resident Abdul Qayyum said cracks had been visible in the embankment for several days. The erosion became severe last night. Nearby homes are now at risk. As the erosion has started during the dry season, preventive and repair work can begin immediately. He said quick action would be possible if the administration took the initiative.

Another local resident, Bebul Ahmed, said many houses are located along the riverbank in Atgram. There are also vegetable fields around these homes. He said they would rather lose their vegetables than see people lose their lives.

Lahin Ahmed Bappi, a student of Atgram Amjadia Dakhil Madrasa, said it was the end of the year and their examinations were approaching. River erosion was causing problems for students travelling to the madrasa. He said quick action would make things easier for the students.

Local residents said effective steps must be taken immediately to stop the erosion. Otherwise, homes and farmland could be lost to the river. They urged the authorities concerned to repair the embankment quickly and take necessary steps to prevent further erosion.
