Broken bridge and dilapidated road leave residents suffering in Fasiakhali, Lama

Residents of Chak Kata area below the police outpost of Fasiakhali Union Parishad in Lama Upazila of Bandarban are suffering immensely due to a broken bridge and the poor condition of the road.
Locals allege that although the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has a budget for repairing the road and bridge, the work has not been completed for a long time.
Local village police and residents alleged, “We informed former chairman Mr. Zaker Hossain Majumder in writing about the need to repair the road and bridge. However, he did not take any initiative to carry out the repairs. People in the area are angry because there has been no progress in the repair work while contractor Mr. Mehedi, who is known as an associate of the Awami League, and his brother were responsible for the work.”
During interviews for this report, local residents said that even after several newspapers published reports about the bridge and road, Lama Upazila LGED engineer Hanif had not taken any action. They also said political leaders come to seek votes during elections but avoid the issue when asked to repair the road and bridge, leaving residents to suffer.
A visit to the area found cracks and potholes at various points along the road in Chak Kata. The damaged section of the bridge is forcing small vehicles and motorcycles to travel at considerable risk. Locals said the situation becomes even worse during the monsoon.
Residents have urged the administration to conduct an immediate on-site inspection, repair the damaged bridge and road, and make them suitable for public use.
