Information Minister Delivers Good News on Garment Workers’ Return to Work

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury has reported that the situation in various industrial belts, including Savar and Ashulia, is returning to normal amid ongoing worker dissatisfaction and restlessness in the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector. He stated that garment factory workers in Savar and Ashulia have returned to work. Additionally, vehicular movement in the garment industrial areas of Mirpur, Gazipur, Tongi, Savar, Narayanganj, and Mymensingh remains normal.

On Thursday morning, November 5, the State Minister detailed the latest situation in the garment industry hubs through a post on his personal Facebook page. According to his post, the return of workers in Savar and Ashulia has created an opportunity to normalize production activities in those factories. Furthermore, he expressed optimism that workers from factories where temporary holidays were declared will also rejoin work shortly after the break ends.

It is worth noting that garment workers are currently protesting to demand the announcement of a minimum wage of 30,000 BDT and the fixation of a specific timeframe for its implementation. The workers argue that restructuring the minimum wage is essential given their cost of living, rising prices of daily essentials, and current economic conditions. At the same time, they are seeking a defined timeline for the effective implementation of the announced wage structure.
