Israel Poses Biggest Threat to Syria’s Stability: Turkish Foreign Minister

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that Israel currently poses the biggest potential threat to Syria’s political stability and security. He issued the warning while speaking to reporters after concluding his visit to Syria.

According to a report by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, during his two-day visit to Damascus, the Turkish foreign minister held a two-hour bilateral meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. The meeting covered a wide range of issues concerning the interests of the two countries and regional security.

Middle East Situation and Israel

Following the meeting, Hakan Fidan said that Syria had returned to a positive trajectory over the past two years by being freed from sanctions and removed from terrorist lists. However, neighbouring Israel is emerging as the main obstacle to this progress.

Fidan said, “Israel never likes to see its neighbouring countries strong and stable. That is why it continues trying to create instability in the Middle East.”

Issuing a stern message to Israel, he said that Israel must either accept peaceful coexistence with its neighbouring countries or risk becoming further isolated in the international arena.

‘Mecca Alliance’ and Regional Security

Hinting at a new emerging alliance of powers on the international stage, Fidan said that technical work on the framework of the new ‘Mecca Alliance’, which is expected to comprise Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, is nearing completion. The alliance’s scope and number of members will be expanded further in the future.

At the same time, he reiterated Ankara’s firm position on Saudi Arabia’s security. He warned that attacks on Saudi Arabia, whether originating from Iran or anywhere else, are completely unacceptable. The Turkish foreign minister also made it clear that Turkey would maintain full solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the face of any threat from Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
