UP Election Dates Finalized: 1st Phase on November 12, Voting in 7 Phases

The Election Commission (EC) has tentatively scheduled the elections for 4,580 Union Councils (UPs) across the country. According to the proposed schedule, the massive local government electoral festival will kick off with the first phase of voting on November 12. A preliminary decision has been made to complete elections in all Union Councils across a total of 7 phases. Following a commission meeting on Monday, September 14, Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah confirmed the authenticity of this information to journalists.

Speaking after the meeting, Election Commissioner Mr. Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah stated that voting for a total of 4,580 Union Councils across the country will be held in 7 phases. According to the announced primary schedule, the first phase of voting will take place on November 12. Voting for the second phase will be held on December 13, and the third phase will take place on December 30. Mentioning the schedules for the subsequent phases, he further stated that the fourth phase of voting will be held on January 17 of next year. Afterwards, the fifth phase will be held on February 4, the sixth phase on April 22, and the seventh and final phase of voting will be held on May 27.

Regarding the action plan for the first phase, the Election Commissioner said that this long process of local government elections may begin with voting in the Union Council elections of 80 upazilas across the country. These decisions have been primarily adopted by the commission. Regarding discussions with political parties, he stated that to make the local government elections fair and universal, the Election Commission will hold detailed discussions with all registered political parties. According to the decision of the commission meeting, the EC will sit for these continuous dialogues with registered parties in the third phase of the entire operation.
