Bangladesh Misses Out On Bronze After Double Failure

Sri Lanka ended Bangladesh’s hopes of securing a bronze medal at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 with a decisive 63-run victory in the men’s cricket third-place match on Saturday. Despite a promising start with the ball, Bangladesh suffered a severe bowling slump followed by a devastating top-order collapse. This disappointing outcome leaves Wushu as Bangladesh’s solitary medal achievement at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, while 2014 gold-medalists Sri Lanka proudly claimed the bronze medal.
Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka endured a disastrous start and were reeling at 21 for 4 before reaching 51 for 4 at the 10-over mark. However, Bangladesh failed to maintain pressure as Sri Lanka completely wrested control in the final stages, plundering 83 runs off the last 5 overs to reach 165 for 9. Mustafizur Rahman conceded 25 runs in his 14th over, while Rishad Hossain went for 37 in his final two overs.
The Sri Lankan innings was anchored by a blazing knock from Tharindu Ratnayake, who smashed a 27-ball fifty before ending on a blistering 65 off 32 balls, featuring 7 fours and 5 sixes. Shehan Arachchige contributed 33 runs, while Mahedi Hasan, Saif Hassan, and Mustafizur Rahman took two wickets each for Bangladesh. The late onslaught shifted all momentum firmly back into Sri Lanka’s favor ahead of the second innings.
In response, Bangladesh’s chase began in catastrophic fashion as their top three batters were dismissed for ducks, effectively sinking the run chase early on. Sri Lanka’s disciplined attack bowled Bangladesh out for 102 runs in 17.3 overs, with Ratnayake and Nuwan Thushara picking up two wickets apiece. A late 28-ball 26 from Nasum Ahmed at number nine merely reduced the defeat margin, while India and Pakistan prepared to fight for gold.
