Delhi Police Register Case Against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi

Political turmoil in India has intensified significantly over a protest organized by the opposition INDIA bloc demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. On Tuesday, October 6, Delhi Police registered an FIR against several top leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, following allegations of forced entry into the premises of public broadcaster ‘Akashvani Bhawan’ during the demonstration in New Delhi.
According to Delhi Police sources, the case was registered based on a complaint lodged by the staff of Akashvani Bhawan. The complaint alleges that despite warnings and obstruction from security personnel, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, Ms. Priyanka Gandhi, and other accompanying opposition leaders forcibly entered the building. They subsequently held a sit-in demonstration inside the premises for several hours.
A senior police officer from the New Delhi district confirmed that the case has been registered under provisions of the Indian Penal Code for criminal trespass. The FIR explicitly names at least 10 Members of Parliament, and an investigation into the matter has been initiated.
Earlier on Tuesday, representatives of the opposition alliance began a march from the Parliament House towards the Election Commission office. A tense standoff ensued after police set up barricades to intercept the procession. For organizing the demonstration without permission and defying Section 144 (currently Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita), police detained approximately 260 protesters, including 10 MPs.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Imran Masood rejected the allegations and hit back at the police. ‘Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of the Opposition in the country’s Lok Sabha, accompanied by other MPs. They did not forcibly enter anywhere. The government institutions of this country are no one’s personal property. We wanted to meet the Chief Election Commissioner, but no one is listening to us. They cannot stop us by filing cases or FIRs,’ he stated.
