Singair’s Sahrail Post Office in Dire State as Operations Continue in Perilous Tin-Shed structure

Saharail Post Office in Singair upazila of Manikganj remains in a state of severe dilapidation due to a long-standing absence of dedicated land and a proper facility, depriving residents of essential services. Situated on a pond bank at Saharail Market in Sayesta Union, the post office operates out of a rusted, leaking two-chala tin-shed hut without electricity. Rainfall regularly drenches furniture and vital documents, while sweltering heat creates extreme distress for staff working inside the precarious structure.
The neglect has significantly compromised operational safety and service quality across the upazila’s 11 unions, where similar sub-post offices face comparable neglect. A severe manpower shortage prevents door-to-door mail delivery, forcing citizens to collect letters in person. Operating under an operational stalemate, the assigned postmaster visits the facility only once a week to distribute mail. Consequently, residents and employees face continuous risks as the unmaintained building continues to deteriorate without immediate structural interventions or municipal support.
Officials and employees have voiced deep frustration over the hazardous working environment. Md. Rafiqul Islam, Postmaster of Joymontop Post Office under Saharail Post Office, noted that no suitable working environment exists in such a dilapidated house and warned that a major accident could happen at any time. Saharail Sub-Postmaster Salma Akhter stated that the office is in terrible condition, adding that she is carrying out her duties with immense hardship solely for the sake of her job.
Addressing the crisis, Upazila Postmaster Md. Kamal Hossain explained that a permanent building cannot be constructed due to the lack of a land donor, but assured that construction will begin once land is available. He further stated that letters have been sent for an urgent resolution to the manpower shortage, promising that renovation work on the branch post offices across the region will begin in phases.
