Two Imran Khans Behind Bars Amid Democracy Protests in India and Pakistan

One is a Bollywood actor, the other a former prime minister of Pakistan. Apart from sharing the same name, they have no connection. However, reports of actor Imran Khan’s detention at a protest in India and former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan’s imprisonment have drawn attention.
The Bollywood actor, nephew of Aamir Khan, is known for films such as Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, I Hate Luv Storys and Delhi Belly. The former Pakistani prime minister rose to international fame as a cricketer before entering politics. He became prime minister in 2018.
Actor Imran Khan Reportedly Detained at Protest
According to reports, actor Imran Khan was scheduled to attend a protest organised by the Cockroach Party at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on Saturday (October 10). The protest reportedly demanded the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Reports that the actor had been detained by police while attending the event recently circulated on social media. A photograph purportedly showing him inside a police vehicle also went viral.
The venue became a point of dispute. According to reports citing police, permission had not been granted for the protest at August Kranti Maidan. The Bombay High Court had designated Azad Maidan as the venue for the demonstration.
The organisers claimed they had emailed the police about the event but received no response. The circumstances remain unclear without official details about the court order, permit conditions and police action.
The report also said a protest had been planned at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Cockroach Party founder Abhijit Deepke and several party members were reportedly detained at Delhi airport on the same day.
Imran Khan’s Bollywood Career
Imran Khan rose to fame with the 2008 film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, which made him popular among young audiences and established him as a romantic lead.
He later appeared in I Hate Luv Storys, Delhi Belly, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. His role in Delhi Belly marked a departure from his usual romantic-hero image.
After appearing regularly in films, he took a break from acting. In recent years, audiences have shown interest in his possible return to the big screen.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in Prison
Before entering politics, Imran Khan captained Pakistan’s national cricket team, leading it to victory in the 1992 World Cup. The achievement made him widely popular in the country.
He founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 1996 and gradually built support with an anti-corruption platform and promises of good governance. He became prime minister in 2018.
Tensions between his government, opposition parties and state institutions grew during his tenure. In April 2022, he lost office following a parliamentary no-confidence vote.
Several cases were subsequently filed against him. He was arrested on August 5, 2023, after being convicted in the Toshakhana case. Further proceedings, sentences and bail decisions in other cases fuelled political controversy.
Imran Khan and PTI have described the cases as politically motivated. The legal proceedings and court rulings, however, must be distinguished from political allegations and statements.
PTI supporters have staged protests over his imprisonment, and demands for his release remain a major issue in Pakistan’s political debate.
