Who Is Obligated to Pay Zakat on Money Saved for a Sister’s Marriage?

Question: I have a sister who is not yet married. Some money has been saved to cover her wedding expenses. Who is responsible for paying zakat on this savings—my mother or my sister?

Answer: Zakat must be paid by the person who currently owns the money. The intended purpose of the savings does not determine who is responsible for paying zakat. Whoever legally owns the money must pay zakat on it.
