Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to Visit Khulna Tomorrow
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Khulna and Mongla on Thursday, October 22, to inspect the development initiatives and assess the economic potential of the southwestern region. Marking his first visit to these areas as head of government following the recent elections, the high-profile tour has generated widespread optimism among locals regarding expansion in regional trade, investment, and employment.
According to the official itinerary, the PM will begin his trip with an aerial survey of the Sundarbans and Hiron Point by helicopter before landing at the Nalian Secondary School ground in Dakop Upazila. From Nalian, he will proceed to Mongla aboard a high-speed Coast Guard vessel via Akram Point, traversing crucial river routes essential to the surrounding coastal ecosystem and maritime transportation networks.
Extensive security and infrastructural preparations are currently underway in Nalian to welcome the PM, with local public representatives and administrative officials inspecting the landing grounds and surrounding areas. Amir Ejaz Khan, Member of Parliament for Khulna-1, stated, ‘The PM’s visit to Nalian is part of official proceedings and involves no local political events,’ while noting that full preparations are in place.
Upon reaching Mongla, the PM will attend an official meeting and conduct a comprehensive inspection of the Mongla Port jetties alongside the proposed economic zone. Following the enhanced connectivity provided by the Padma Bridge, Mongla Port has emerged as a crucial hub for import-export trade, requiring modern cargo handling facilities, maintained river navigability, and balanced environmental strategies to realise its potential fully.
Looking ahead, stakeholders anticipate that this visit will significantly accelerate key development projects, boost Sundarbans-centric sustainable tourism, and attract new industrial investments to the southwest. Furthermore, the PM is scheduled to return to Khulna on November 5 to inaugurate the second edition of the ‘Notun Kuri Sports’ event at the Khulna District Stadium.
