Israel Detains Al-Aqsa Mosque Preacher After Friday Prayers

Israeli forces detained Sheikh Khaled Abu Jumaa, the preacher at Al-Aqsa Mosque, after Friday prayers and the sermon on October 23. He was detained inside the mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported.

Citing the Jerusalem Governorate, WAFA said Sheikh Abu Jumaa was detained after delivering the Friday sermon and leading prayers. He was later released.

According to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, he was barred from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque for one week upon his release. The report said the ban could be extended. Israeli authorities, however, did not give a clear explanation for his detention.

Tensions have persisted over Israeli restrictions on the entry and movement of Palestinian worshippers and religious figures at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
