Racist and Terrorist Attack in France: Is Anti-Muslim Hatred Growing in Europe?

One person was killed and five others, including a 12-year-old child, were injured in a deadly shooting in Trappes and La Verrière, on the outskirts of Paris, the French capital. French President Emmanuel Macron described the attack in the working-class areas, home to large immigrant and Muslim communities, as a “terrorist and racist” attack.

Following the incident on Friday morning, security forces arrested a 39-year-old suspect, Kevin T. Local MP Laurent Mazaury said the suspect had told police that he “wanted to kill foreigners.” Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh also described the violence as an Islamophobic and racist attack, calling it a serious crime against humanity.

France’s National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has launched an investigation into the attack and detained a member of the suspect’s family. A semi-automatic weapon dating from the Second World War and tear gas grenades were recovered from the suspect’s car.

The attack has sparked fresh fear and concern across France amid a tense political climate fuelled by the rising cost of living and student protests. Authorities have strengthened security measures across the country to contain the situation.
