India’s Helplessness Exposed on China’s Arunachal Border; Modi Govt on Back Foot

A recent admission by Shatrujeet Kapoor, Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), has placed the Indian central government under severe pressure. Mr. Kapoor confirmed that the Indian Army is engaged in a military standoff with Chinese forces at multiple locations along the Arunachal Pradesh border. This marks the first official comment from top security leadership acknowledging escalating tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). While local media outlets had been highlighting the situation for months, official authorities had previously denied these reports, creating significant political controversy and raising national security concerns across the region.

Residents and village leadership in the border districts have consistently raised alarms regarding ongoing Chinese incursions into traditional Indian territories. Prakash Hari, a Panchayat leader from Taksing village in Upper Subansiri district, stated in a video report, ‘We have spoken to the administration and the army multiple times regarding this, but to no avail.’ According to reports by local organisations like the Nah Welfare Society, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army has constructed military camps, roads, and bridges in areas traditionally used by locals for grazing and resource collection, with activities intensifying sharply since 2020.

The government’s official stance presents a stark contrast to ground reports, leading to contentious debate among senior political leaders. Former Union Minister R.K. Singh publicly questioned the administration, asserting, ‘It appears we have abandoned the patrolling point named ‘Shera 5’ in Taksing, Arunachal, and the Chinese have established a strong position there.’ Conversely, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju dismissed deep incursion claims while acknowledging heightened border activity, noting, ‘Our people believe our land extends further forward, while the villages on the Chinese side claim their land extends into ours. Consequently, confusion remains.’

Opposition parties have launched sharp attacks against the ruling government, accusing top leadership of hiding ground realities from the public. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, criticised the administration, alleging, ‘In China, they are preventing us from patrolling in our own territory. Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Narendra Modi cannot handle themselves.’ Concurrently, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed deep concern over the ITBP chief’s confirmation, arguing that the Modi government has repeatedly given clean chits to China instead of revealing the absolute truth about border security to the nation.

Despite official denials from the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister and military spokespersons, bilateral steps indicate ongoing efforts to resolve regional friction. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, ‘Both sides continue to utilise existing diplomatic and military mechanisms to resolve unresolved issues and maintain discussions to avoid misunderstandings or miscalculations along the Line of Actual Control.’ Reports confirm high-level engagements, including a Corps Commander-level meeting held on September 6 at the Wacha-Damai Border Meeting Point, aimed at addressing unresolved operational friction points along the disputed frontier.
