Japan Plans $635 Crore in Private Investment in Bangladesh

Japan is planning to facilitate private investment worth 1 trillion yen, or around $635 crore, in Bangladesh over the next five years. Japan’s media outlet Nikkei Asia reported the development in an article published on October 22.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in Tokyo on Monday morning (October 26) on a four-day official visit. At the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, he is visiting Japan from October 26 to 29, with a focus on strengthening strategic ties, expanding trade and attracting Japanese investment.

According to the Nikkei Asia report, Japan may agree to facilitate 1 trillion yen in private investment in Bangladesh over the next five years. Potential investment areas include automobile and other manufacturing industries, as well as energy infrastructure development.

The plan is also expected to include participation by companies investing in special economic zones established in Bangladesh with Japanese involvement. According to the report, several parties, including Japanese trading company Sumitomo Corporation, are involved in developing special economic zones in Bangladesh. Increased investment by Japanese companies in these zones could help expand the country’s manufacturing sector, create jobs and improve technology and industrial skills.

The proposed investment initiative is a key focus of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit. He is scheduled to hold a summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the Japanese prime minister’s office on Tuesday, October 27. After the meeting, he is expected to attend a joint statement announcement and a luncheon hosted by the Japanese prime minister.

Strengthening the existing strategic partnership, expanding trade and investment, developing infrastructure and increasing development cooperation are expected to feature prominently in the discussions. The two leaders are also expected to discuss regional and international issues.

During the visit, the prime minister will meet representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). He is also scheduled to hold discussions with representatives of major Japanese companies, including Mitsui & Co., Sumitomo Corporation and JERA.

In addition, the prime minister will deliver the keynote address at the Bangladesh–Japan Economic Forum in Tokyo, which will bring together business leaders and investors from both countries. On Wednesday, he is scheduled to visit the headquarters of Uniqlo and meet its senior officials. On the final day of the visit, Thursday, he is expected to tour Toyota Motor Corporation’s Motomachi plant in Nagoya.

The visit is considered important for strengthening economic relations between Bangladesh and Japan. The two countries signed an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) in February this year. Implementing the agreement effectively, expanding access for Bangladeshi products to the Japanese market and increasing business ties between the two countries are among the key objectives of the visit.

If implemented, the proposed investment plan could create new opportunities for Bangladesh’s automobile manufacturing industry, other industrial sectors and energy infrastructure development. It could also help attract foreign investment, diversify export products and expand partnerships between Bangladeshi industries and Japanese companies.
