Bangladesh Take 138-Run Lead at Stumps on Day Two of Dhaka Test

Although Jomel Warrican impressed with the ball, Bangladesh ended the day in a relatively comfortable position. After Shadman Islam’s brilliant century, Bangladesh added just 59 runs for their final seven wickets before being bowled out for 272. In reply, the West Indies finished the day at 134 for four, leaving Bangladesh with a first-innings lead of 138 runs.
Bangladesh resumed the second day at 213 for three, but West Indies left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop quickly struck a major blow. Shadman Islam, unbeaten on 99 overnight, completed his third Test century with two runs off the second ball of the day. He eventually fell lbw to Bishop for 105 off 234 balls, hitting 11 fours. After Mr. Shadman’s dismissal, Towhid Hridoy was bowled by Mr. Bishop for his overnight score of 42. Mr. Hridoy had left the field on the first day after experiencing muscle cramps but returned to bat on the second.
Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz then mounted some resistance, adding 32 runs for their partnership. However, Warrican broke the stand by bowling Mehidy Miraz for 15. Shamar Joseph subsequently removed Nayeem Hasan and Hasan Mahmud in quick succession, triggering a collapse in Bangladesh’s lower order. Warrican later dismissed Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam to complete his five-wicket haul.
Mr. Warrican finished with five wickets for 53 runs in 23.4 overs, recording his fourth five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Mr. Bishop took two wickets for 61 runs, while Mr. Joseph claimed two for 41. Mr. Shadman top-scored for Bangladesh with 105, followed by Mr. Hridoy’s 42. Litton Das remained unbeaten on 34.
Chasing Bangladesh’s total of 272, the West Indies lost Brandon King early for 15, with Hasan Mahmud providing the breakthrough. However, John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul steadied the innings.
John Campbell was the more aggressive of the two, scoring an important 53 to register his sixth Test half-century. He reached the milestone by hitting a four and a six in the same over bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Chanderpaul also made a useful contribution of 21.
The West Indies ended the day at 134 for four, trailing Bangladesh by 138 runs on the first innings.
Among Bangladesh’s bowlers, Hasan Mahmud made the early breakthrough by dismissing Mr. King. The spinners then made their presence felt. Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed Campbell, while Taijul Islam picked up two important wickets to halt the visitors’ progress. Their strikes in the latter part of the day checked the West Indies’ promising start and helped Bangladesh regain some control.
Mr. Shadman’s 105 and Mr. Warrican’s five wickets for 53 runs were the standout individual performances of the day. Bangladesh’s main disappointment was their collapse from 213 for three to 272 all out. The key question now is whether the West Indies can recover from 134 for four.
On the third day, Bangladesh will have an opportunity to strengthen their grip on the match by taking the remaining wickets quickly and extending their lead.
