Sobhana Nominated for Player of the Month in Australia

Sobhana Mostary stands on the threshold of remarkable recognition after her record-breaking century during Bangladesh’s tour of Australia, earning a place on the shortlist for the ICC Player of the Month award. The Bangladeshi batter is competing with India’s Deepti Sharma and Australia’s Annabel Sutherland for the women’s player of the month title for October. Meanwhile, the shortlist for the men’s player of the month for last month features South Africa’s Marco Jansen, Pakistan’s Arafat Minhas, and the West Indies’ Shai Hope.

During their historic tour of Australia, Bangladesh suffered a 3-0 whitewash in the three-match ODI series. Amid the team’s struggles, Ms. Sobhana shone with the bat in the second match. In that fixture in Brisbane, she scored 118 runs off 134 deliveries, hitting 18 boundaries. This marked Sobhana’s maiden international century. At the same time, she became the first Bangladeshi player to score a hundred against Australia on Australian soil. She also became the first Bangladeshi, at any venue, to play a three-digit innings against Australia.

That is not all; Sobhana’s knock of 118 is the highest individual innings by a Bangladeshi woman in ODIs. Farzana Hoque’s 107 against India in 2023 held the previous record. Although Sobhana failed to reach double figures in the other two matches of the ICC Women’s Championship series, she scored 129 runs across the series at a strike rate of 73.71.
