Scotland-Canada Reach Unique ODI Milestone
Australia and England played the first-ever One-Day International on January 5, 1971, in Melbourne. Fifty-five years later, ICC Associate members Scotland and Canada entered the record books by playing the 5,000th ODI. The teams met in an ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Dundee, Scotland, on Friday, with Scotland securing a memorable nine-run victory. Australia won the first ODI by five wickets with 42 balls to spare. The 1,000th ODI came nearly 24 years later, when England faced West Indies at Nottingham on May 25, 1995. England won by five wickets.
The 2,000th ODI was played in Sharjah on April 10, 2003, with Pakistan defeating Zimbabwe by eight wickets. Seven years later, England beat Australia by four wickets in Southampton in the 3,000th ODI on June 22, 2010. The 4,000th ODI took place in Harare on March 17, 2018, when Papua New Guinea defeated Hong Kong by 58 runs. After 3,065 days, the format reached its 5,000th match. Scotland and Canada have now secured their place in ODI history by participating in the landmark match, adding another chapter to the format’s remarkable 55-year journey since its inaugural game.
