AI-Powered Auto-Fine System Launched on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway
Bangladesh has launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-based Auto Fine System on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway to automatically detect traffic violations and issue fines. The system was inaugurated by Home Minister Mr. Salahuddin Ahmed on Tuesday at the Meghnaghat Highway Monitoring Centre in Narayanganj.
According to Highway Police, 1,427 AI and CCTV cameras have been installed along a 250-kilometre stretch of highway from Signboard in Narayanganj to Chattogram City Gate. The network includes bullet, PTZ dome, long-vision and AI checkpoint cameras mounted on 490 poles.
The cameras will automatically detect violations such as speeding, illegal parking and driving on the wrong side of the road. Once a violation is identified, a case notification will be sent via SMS to the registered owner of the vehicle, who can then pay the fine through designated mobile financial services.
Officials said the automated system will reduce direct interactions between police and motorists, helping improve transparency and accountability while limiting opportunities for corruption. It will also speed up the transfer of fines to the government treasury.
The surveillance network will be monitored through a central data centre at Meghnaghat in Sonargaon and five monitoring centres located at Highway Police Headquarters, Kanchpur Highway Police Station, Cumilla Highway Region Office, Daudkandi Highway Police Station and Baraulia Highway Police Station.
Highway Police said the initiative is expected to improve compliance with traffic laws, enhance road discipline and reduce accidents. Authorities claimed it is the first fully automated traffic prosecution system of its kind in South Asia.
Among those attending the inauguration were Mr. Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, President of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation and Member of Parliament, Mr. Azharul Islam Mannan, MP for Narayanganj-3, Senior Secretary Mr. Monjur Morshed Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police Mr. Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, and Additional IGP of Highway Police Mr. Faruk Ahmed, who chaired the event.
