Beijing Plans Autonomous Robotic Defence Shield in South China Sea

Beijing intends to replace conventional human-manned systems with automated, robot-based defence rings on disputed islands in the South China Sea. The South China Morning Post claims that this project directly tackles the growing threat posed by inexpensive drone swarms, which are putting traditional defences at greater risk. Through a multi-domain network that seamlessly combines airborne, surface, and underwater drones, the integrated mechanism will safeguard these important outposts and establish an unbreakable security barrier over the region’s highly competitive waterways.
Researchers from Dalian Maritime University and the China Coast Guard Academy created the strategic plan, which was published in the military journal Command Control & Simulation. According to the paper, this study explores potential avenues for unmanned defence systems in light of the complex situation in surrounding maritime areas and the practical hurdles of deploying integrated defences against low-cost unmanned platforms. Instead of using heavy gear and conventional military troops to defend remote outposts, this networked system will function independently across several domains at once.
This project is a reflection of how quickly modern naval warfare has evolved, where significantly more expensive conventional ships may be rapidly overpowered by inexpensive unmanned swarms. Beijing will greatly reduce operational risks for military troops while greatly enhancing the overall resilience and strategic preparedness of its outposts in the disputed area with a network-centric unmanned defence structure. Ultimately, the concept portends a time when China would have permanent, multi-domain autonomous systems centred upon disputed features that continually monitor, identify, and collectively neutralise possible foreign threats.
