US Sanctions and Pressure Will Not Solve Iran Crisis

China has officially said that the current Middle East problem will not be resolved by US economic sanctions and unilateral pressure against Iran, urging all sides to seek a peaceful diplomatic settlement instead. Speaking at a news conference for the foreign ministry, spokesperson Lin Jian vehemently disagreed with Washington’s use of coercion, saying, ‘Sanctions and pressure cannot solve any problem’. He asked international parties to exhibit patience and act responsibly before the issue worsens, emphasising that solutions must be sought through dialogue and diplomatic efforts rather than conflict and confrontation. Mr. Lin also stated that all relevant parties should take responsible steps to resolve the crisis and manage differences constructively.

Beijing’s statements follow Washington’s declaration of further, strict economic sanctions against Tehran. Iranian authorities vehemently denounced the severe disciplinary actions, calling them ‘economic terrorism’ and ‘crimes against humanity’. China reaffirmed its strong opposition to economic coercion in light of the rapidly escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, especially with regard to maritime security and trade concerns around the crucial Strait of Hormuz. ‘A lasting regional resolution can only be achieved through peaceful negotiations,’ Beijing stressed, cautioning that more pressure will only exacerbate instability and volatility in the area.
