Tarique Rahman’s Visit: India’s President’s Office Withdraws Earlier Announcement

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to New Delhi was hinted at in a notice later withdrawn by India’s President’s Office. The notice, issued on Friday, said the regular ‘Change of Guard’ ceremony at the President’s Palace would not be held on Saturday because of a full rehearsal for the formal reception of the Bangladesh prime minister. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Indian news agency IANS also published the notice. However, it was removed within about 30 minutes. The President’s Office later issued a statement withdrawing the earlier announcement. The statement said, “This high-profile visit has not yet been officially announced by either New Delhi or Dhaka. The press release issued on August 21, 2026, stating that there will be no ‘Change of Guard’ ceremony, is withdrawn.”

Bangladesh and India have been discussing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit for several weeks. However, relations have faced tensions over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India and her recent political statements. Bangladesh has said the visit will not be finalised until India provides a positive response and a “favorable environment” is created regarding Hasina’s extradition and the handover of other accused persons. India has said the extradition request is being examined under its legal and judicial processes.
