Jamaat’s ‘Bot Force’ Takes to Field in Support of State Minister Mr. Lincoln

A coordinated online campaign has reportedly emerged in support of newly appointed State Minister for Religious Affairs Muhammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln amid growing opposition from Hanafi scholars and worshippers. Several scholars have demanded his removal, accusing him of making controversial remarks about the Hanafi school, Deobandi scholars, traditional pirs and Tablighi Jamaat, as well as promoting Salafi and non-madhhab views.

Analysts said Mr. Lincoln has a modern educational background, including higher studies in business administration, with no formal madrasa education or affiliation with traditional Islamic institutions. Despite this, a section of online activists has reportedly rallied behind him as criticism from religious scholars intensified.

According to netizens and eyewitnesses, Jamaat-linked accounts have been conducting coordinated attacks and using abusive language against critics in Facebook comment sections. They are also accused of working alongside Salafi groups to promote Lincoln and defend his position.

Senior scholars from Ahl-e-Sunnat wal Jamaat and Qawmi circles have condemned the alleged campaign, accusing Jamaat of siding with Salafi and non-madhhab groups for political interests. They have called for an end to the alleged online propaganda and demanded Mr. Lincoln’s removal, saying the sentiments of the country’s majority Hanafi Muslims should be respected.
