250 missing persons confirmed as enforced disappearance victims: Chief Prosecutor

International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam said investigations have found preliminary evidence confirming the enforced disappearance of 250 people who went missing during the Awami League rule and have yet to return.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, he said the victims were abducted by law enforcement agencies and the incidents have been identified as crimes against humanity. Investigators are recording statements from the victims’ families and identifying the locations where the abductions took place.

Mr. Aminul said three enforced disappearance cases are currently being tried, involving victims including former Brigadier General Abdullahil Amaan Azmi and Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Quasem Arman. He said cases involving BNP figures, including Suman and Elias Ali, would also be tried under the same standards.

He stressed that there would be no discrimination based on political or religious identity and said a five-member team is investigating the cases. Meanwhile, members of the victims’ families, led by Maayer Dak coordinator Sanjida Islam Tuli, urged that the investigations and trials not be influenced by political considerations.
