Two Bangladeshi Women Return Home After Serving Two Years in Indian Jail
Two Bangladeshi women returned home on a special travel permit after serving two years in an Indian jail. At around 6pm on Tuesday, September 8, Indian Petrapole immigration police handed them over to Benapole immigration police.
The two returnees are Laboni Biswas, daughter of Labu Biswas of Ghagha village in Lohagara upazila of Narail, and Moni Biswas, daughter of Jahangir Biswas of Mahishkhola village in the same upazila.
Laboni Biswas said they illegally entered India through the border on August 4, 2024, through a broker in search of better employment. They were arrested by Indian police while working in households in Bengaluru.
Police produced them before a court, which sentenced them to two years in prison for illegal entry. After completing their sentences, the Bengaluru-based Balamandir Child Home took responsibility for them and placed them in a shelter home.
Later, with the assistance of the embassies of both countries and through a special travel permit issued by the Indian government, they returned home on Tuesday evening.
Benapole Immigration Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saifur Rahman said the two women returning from India were handed over to Benapole Port Police Station after completing immigration formalities. From there, human rights organisation Justice and Care will receive them and hand them over to their respective families.
Justice and Care field worker Shafiqul Islam said the organisation received the two women from Benapole Port Police Station and placed them in its shelter home. They will be handed over to their respective families today, Wednesday.
