Indian Authorities Demolish Church at Night Despite Court Stay Claim

A church was demolished late at night on Sunday (September 6) in Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad area of India. Church authorities claimed the action was taken despite a court stay order being in force concerning the building. The disputed building was located in Rajwade Nagar, Kalewadi.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation said it had conducted a major demolition drive against illegal constructions, removing several structures covering around 7,400 square feet. However, its official statement made no mention of any court order or stay.

Church members alleged that they had not been given any prior notice. Rose, who had been coming there to pray for nearly a decade, said they rushed to the site after learning about the demolition at night. Upon arrival, they saw three JCB excavators and around 700 police personnel at the site.

Although the members informed the authorities about the stay order and a hearing scheduled for the following day, Monday, the demolition was not stopped. Officials were also accused of entering the premises and forcibly removing people. They allegedly threatened to seize or break phones to prevent anyone from taking photos or videos.

Various items inside the church, including fans purchased with donations collected from poor members, were damaged. Rose lamented, “We work hard. Many of us are very poor.” However, she said they would accept whatever decision the court makes.
