Chattogram Chhatra Dal Leader Expelled After Alcohol Seized From Home

Police have recovered 70 bottles of foreign liquor from the residence of a leader of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) during a raid in Chattogram. The police conducted the operation at the home of Mohammad Abu Shakil (33), posing as customers. Police said Shakil fled after sensing their presence. However, two people were arrested for allegedly illegally possessing and selling liquor.

According to police and Chhatra Dal sources, Mohammad Abu Shakil is a joint convener of the Bandar Thana unit of Chhatra Dal. Police raided his residence in the K.B. Dovash Lane area of Bandar Thana on Wednesday evening. During a search of Shakil’s bedroom, police recovered 70 bottles of foreign liquor, estimated to be worth Tk 1.095 million.

Police arrested two people from the scene, identified as Pushpen Banerjee (58) and Shamsul Islam (47).
Police said a team from the Detective South Division received information through a confidential source that liquor was being bought and sold in the Madhyam Gosaildanga area. Police officers later went to the residence posing as customers and were taken to Abu Shakil’s home. When Abu Shakil realised that members of the Detective Branch were present, he fled the scene.

Aminur Rashid, assistant commissioner (media) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, said police launched the operation after receiving information that drug dealers were staying in the area to conduct drug transactions. Two people were arrested during the operation, and 70 bottles of foreign liquor were recovered from them. A case has been filed with Bandar Police Station in connection with the incident, and efforts are underway to arrest the absconding accused.

Meanwhile, Chhatra Dal has taken organisational action following the incident.
According to a statement issued by the organisation, Mohammad Abu Shakil has been expelled from his organisational post and primary membership based on specific allegations of violating organisational discipline. Chattogram city Chhatra Dal Convener Saiful Alam and Member Secretary Shariful Islam Tuhin approved the decision.
Confirming the matter, Shariful Islam Tuhin, member secretary of Chattogram city Chhatra Dal, said they saw reports about the incident in several media outlets. Following this, Abu Shakil was expelled from his organisational post along with his primary membership. The organisation is also investigating the matter.
