US Set to Impose 100% Tariffs on 10 Countries, Including India
A widely discussed Russia sanctions bill is set to pass the US House of Representatives. Titled the “Lindsey and Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026,” the bill includes provisions allowing tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries that purchase oil or fuel from Russia. Most notably, a proposed amendment specifically includes India among the countries that could face such tariffs.
The bill is currently under consideration by the House after recently passing the US Senate by a vote of 86-11. Democratic Congressman Steny Hoyer has introduced a new amendment recommended by a House committee. The amendment explicitly names 10 countries, including India. The other countries on the list are China, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Slovakia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
However, even if the bill passes, the 100% tariffs on India will not take effect immediately. It would give the US president the authority to impose such additional tariffs on countries purchasing energy from Russia at a time he deems appropriate.
The Senate-passed version previously did not name any countries, instead identifying the “top five largest importers of Russian oil and gas” without specifying their names. Meanwhile, several members, including Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks, have submitted another amendment seeking to remove the provision granting the president such broad authority to impose secondary tariffs.
With little time remaining for the House ahead of the US midterm elections, how India’s name and the tariff provisions ultimately appear in the bill’s final version will depend on the vote and subsequent decisions.
