Bangladesh Seeks Bhutan’s Support To Revive SAARC

Bangladesh has sought Bhutan’s support to reactivate the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). During Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay’s brief transit stop at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday (September 18), Bangladesh sought Bhutan’s support to revive SAARC for the common welfare of the region and its people.

During the Bhutanese prime minister’s brief transit, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moin Khan and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir welcomed him at the airport.

During the meeting, the minister and state minister highlighted the vision of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for a prosperous South Asia. They also conveyed warm greetings from the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to the Bhutanese prime minister during the brief conversation.

Mr. Moin Khan and Humayun Kabir expressed Bangladesh’s interest in contributing to the development of Bhutan’s ‘Gelephu Mindfulness City’ (GMC), particularly by providing professionals as well as skilled and semi-skilled workers.

They also discussed bilateral issues of mutual interest. They praised the long-standing friendship between Bangladesh and Bhutan, which has developed since Bhutan became the first country to recognise Bangladesh in 1971.

The Bhutanese ambassador to Bangladesh and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at the meeting. Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay stayed for about an hour at the VVIP Lounge before departing for Germany.
