Mamata Pulls Out of Nandigram Bypoll After Own Candidate Meets Suvendu

In a major political shift, former West Bengal Chief Minister and AITC founder Ms. Mamata Banerjee announced that her party will not contest the October 6 Nandigram assembly by-election and will instead back the Congress candidate. This decision came after Ms. Sanchita Dey Pradhan, the key candidate fielded by her faction, abruptly withdrew her nomination just a day before the official deadline. Ms. Pradhan pulled out following a secretive meeting in Kolkata with West Bengal Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Mr. Suvendu Adhikari. The by-poll was triggered after Mr. Adhikari vacated Nandigram to retain Bhabanipur, where he had previously defeated Banerjee, bringing an end to TMC’s 15-year reign.

The dramatic withdrawal coincides with a severe internal rift within the Trinamool Congress, prompting the Election Commission (EC) to intervene by freezing the party’s original name and official symbol. Following the split, the EC assigned temporary new names and symbols to both competing groups until the ownership dispute is fully resolved. The faction led by Ms. Mamata Banerjee has been officially allotted the name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ alongside the Football Player symbol. Conversely, the pro-BJP rebel camp headed by Mr. Arup Roy will now function under the name ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ with the Envelope symbol assigned to them.

The EC’s ruling faced intense backlash from major Opposition figures who criticized the freezing of the legacy political identity. Strongly condemning the decision, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, publicly declared that this struggle extends far beyond Ms. Mamata Banerjee herself. He emphasized on social media, ‘This is a fight for every political party and every voter who demands free and fair elections.’ Expressing concern about democracy, Mr. Gandhi added, ‘Stolen votes, stolen governments, and now stolen parties, these have become the defining symbols of our democratic decline,’ and alleged that the EC is directly aiding forces that undermine mandates.

Echoing similar concerns, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) Mr. K.C. Venugopal launched a fierce critique against Chief Election Commissioner Mr. Gyanesh Kumar over the timing of the interim order. Mr. Venugopal described the freezing of the name and symbol as a ‘late-night birthday gift to Modiji’ following what he termed an unconstitutional takeover attempt backed by the BJP. He argued that lawmakers who originally fought the BJP under Ms. Mamata Banerjee’s leadership are now being emboldened to defect through the active support of the poll body. Mr. Venugopal also urged the EC to immediately restore the original name and symbol to Ms. Mamata Banerjee’s faction.

As the political landscape reshapes ahead of the upcoming by-polls, the strategic alliance between the Congress and Banerjee’s faction aims to consolidate anti-BJP votes in Nandigram. Addressing the media regarding her decision to back the Congress, Ms. Mamata Banerjee stated, ‘We are extending our support to Congress in Nandigram. We are doing this for the greater interest of the nation. We will all fight together against BJP.’ Meanwhile, both newly designated factions are preparing to test their voter base under their temporary election symbols on October 6 amidst ongoing legal and constitutional debates surrounding the EC’s interim order.
