Part of Century Old Graveyard Demolished by Bulldozers in India

Authorities in Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) in Uttar Pradesh, India, ran an eviction drive this week. During the drive, workers reportedly bulldozed a graveyard that was nearly 100 years old. The incident has caused strong anger among local residents and members of the graveyard committee.

The graveyard committee says the site has existed for almost a century. They also say old historical documents confirm its legal status. The committee claims that KDA carried out the demolition even though the committee had submitted all valid papers.

Reports say officials used heavy bulldozers during the operation. The boundary wall and a large part of the graveyard were damaged as a result. Local residents tried to protest the action, but a large number of police officers were stationed at the site.

KDA officials, however, say the land was illegally occupied. They claim the demolition was carried out as a normal part of the authority’s eviction rules. The committee has completely rejected this claim made by the officials.

Committee members say they plan to take the matter to court. They also say they have full ownership and registration documents for the graveyard. They are asking why the demolition went ahead despite their strong objections and valid papers.

Local residents now feel deep concern about the protection of old graveyards. They worry whether proper rules are followed before religious and social properties are evicted. The committee has made clear that it will continue its legal fight in the appropriate court.

They added that they will use every legal safeguard to protect the remaining land of the graveyard.
