Prime Minister Embarks on a Swift Visit with a Minimal Delegation

Mr. Mahdi Amin, Adviser to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for his office, stated that PM Tarique Rahman’s trip to the United Nations is not about pomp and show, but about working for the people, aiming to safeguard Bangladesh’s national interests rather than displaying power. Describing the visit as a historic milestone and a mission focused on public service over grand ceremony, he emphasized that PM Tarique Rahman departed Dhaka for New York on Monday morning to represent the nation at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Highlighting the compact nature of the itinerary, Mr. Mahdi Amin noted on his verified Facebook page on Monday afternoon that the entire journey spans just six days, including two days of travel and a brief four-day stay packed with back-to-back bilateral and multilateral engagements. The official delegation consists of 35 members, including 15 ministers, state ministers, advisers, and special assistants, alongside essential security, media, and personal staff. The PMO spokesperson stressed that every moment of these four days will be dedicated to high-level UN events and intense diplomatic efforts in the nation’s interest.

The visit marks a major family and historical legacy on the world stage. Following Shaheed President Mr. Ziaur Rahman and former PM Ms. Khaleda Zia, their son, democratically elected PM Tarique Rahman, will address the UN global forum as the third representative from the same family. Mr. Mahdi Amin pointed out another unique historical dimension to this visit: while PM Tarique Rahman represents Bangladesh before the international assembly, his own Foreign Minister will preside over that very UN General Assembly session as its President.

Describing the diplomatic mission as the culmination of popular aspirations, Mr. Mahdi Amin stated that a democratic government has assumed state responsibility after more than two decades of ceaseless sacrifice, struggle, and popular uprising. Carrying a resounding public mandate to the international community, the trip represents far more than standard foreign travel.
