Asad Alam Siam to Be Bangladesh’s New High Commissioner to India

India has formally approved the appointment of Asad Alam Siam as Bangladesh’s new High Commissioner to India, according to Indian media reports on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. A copy of the formal approval has also been handed over to Dhaka, they reported.

Bangladesh sought India’s approval for Siam’s appointment as its next high commissioner more than a month ago. Siam, a career diplomat who joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1995, is expected to replace M Riaz Hamidullah in New Delhi within the next few weeks. Hamidullah has been appointed Bangladesh’s new permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, according to the Hindustan Times.

Siam has held a wide range of assignments at home and abroad. Before being appointed foreign secretary in June 2025, he served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to the United States for less than a year. He served as ambassador to Austria from 2023 to 2024 and to the Philippines from 2017 to 2021.

Siam also served as Bangladesh’s first consul general in Milan, assistant high commissioner in Manchester, and a junior diplomat in Indonesia and Thailand. At home, he served as chief of protocol, director general of the Europe and EU division, and director in the office of the foreign secretary.
