Canada Announces C$100 Million in New Aid for Palestinians
Canada has announced C$100 million in new assistance for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Of the announced amount, C$80 million will be spent on humanitarian assistance. The remaining C$20 million will go toward development and security-related activities. This includes additional funding for Canada’s long-running programme to train Palestinian police officers in the West Bank. Mr. Carney also said Canada is preparing to expand similar training to Gaza if security conditions allow.
Mr. Carney said Palestinians in Gaza are facing “widespread humanitarian suffering.” At the same time, he referred to security threats facing Israelis from Hamas, Iran and their allies. He said the new Canadian assistance is aimed at keeping the possibility of a two-state solution alive. Canada said its total aid commitment for Palestinian civilians since the Gaza war began in October 2023 has now exceeded C$600 million. In June, Canada also announced another C$100 million in international assistance for Palestinians. A large part of that funding was allocated to emergency medical care, food, water, sanitation, shelter and protection programmes.
