Wave of Rape and Public Assault Cases Sparks Safety Crisis for Women in India

A recent surge in high-profile rape cases, gang rapes, and public sexual harassment incidents across India has sparked intense panic and outrage among women nationwide. The escalating situation forced a prestigious women’s college in Delhi to suspend physical classes and shift to online learning to ensure student safety, highlighting growing daily uncertainty for students and working women alike.

Statistical data shows that sexual harassment accounted for 65 percent of all reported crimes in India in 2020, up from 53.39 percent in 2019.

Recently, police arrested four men- including a police sub-inspector, a constable, a CRPF inspector, and a head constable, for the alleged gang rape of a 25-year-old woman at a farmhouse in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. The victim reported being lured under the pretext of visiting religious sites before being assaulted. She managed to contact police online the following morning.

In Delhi, Lady Shri Ram College transitioned to online classes following the gang rape of a minor in nearby Aastha Kunj Park. Students questioned the measure, calling instead for safer public spaces, adequate street lighting, and improved police patrolling.

Incidents of public sexual violence were also reported in Bihar. In Samastipur, four individuals were arrested after video footage emerged showing a woman being publicly assaulted on a bypass road. In Jamui, police arrested a primary suspect following an encounter after a 10th-grade student was sexually harassed in public, an incident that prompted widespread public protest.

The involvement of law enforcement personnel in several of these recent crimes across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar has brought India’s women’s safety measures under severe scrutiny, drawing widespread criticism and demands for concrete, visible protection.
