Xi Calls on US and China to Work Together for Global Peace

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the United States and China to work together as responsible global powers to contribute to world peace and stability. He also said China-US relations had reached a new historical juncture and that the two countries needed to find new ways to manage their relationship.
Mr. Xi made the remarks in a speech at a state dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington on Thursday (September 24). Mr. Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, welcomed Mr. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to the dinner.
Mr. Xi said that amid rapid changes in the world, the United States and China, as two major countries, have a historic responsibility to contribute to human development and progress. The two countries should meet the expectations of their peoples, keep pace with changing times and seek new ways to manage relations between major powers, he said.
He further said that greater cooperation between the United States and China would benefit both countries, while conflict would harm both sides. Although the two countries compete, the competition should remain healthy and within limits, he said. He also called for avoiding conflict and confrontation while strengthening regular communication between the two countries’ militaries and mechanisms for managing crises.
In his dinner speech, Mr. Xi also highlighted the US goal of “Make America Great Again” and China’s goals of national rejuvenation and modernisation. In his view, the two countries’ ambitious goals need not conflict with each other and could instead complement one another.
Mr. Xi also said that he and Mr. Trump had reached agreements on many issues through their discussions, providing a new foundation for strategically stable relations between the two countries. He said this had also created new strategic direction for China-US relations.
At the dinner, Mr. Trump presented Mr. Xi with a sculpture of a bald eagle. Earlier, Mr. Trump had said that relations between the two countries were in a better position than at any previous time. Senior officials from the technology and business sectors also attended the dinner.
