Iran Signals Readiness to Reduce 60% Enriched Uranium Under US Deal

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has indicated that Iran is prepared to reduce or dilute its uranium enriched to up to 60 percent if it reaches a deal with the United States. He also assured that Iran would comply with the necessary conditions under international law and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Mr. Pezeshkian made the remarks in an interview with US media outlet Fox News on Thursday (September 24). Asked whether Tehran was prepared to reduce its uranium enriched to up to 60 percent if it reached a deal with the United States, he agreed.
Mr. Pezeshkian said Iran would comply with the necessary conditions applicable to it within the framework of international law and on the basis of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. In the same interview, he also said Iran was prepared to allow international verification of its nuclear programme.
In the interview with Fox News, Mr. Pezeshkian further said Tehran was ready to dilute its enriched uranium and allow international verification of its nuclear programme. He stressed that Iran does not want to develop nuclear weapons.
Mr. Pezeshkian said Tehran was interested in reaching an understanding through negotiations with the United States. He said the two countries had previously discussed a framework for an understanding and that Iran remained ready to move forward on the basis of that framework.
Iran’s enrichment of uranium to levels of up to 60 percent has long been a source of international concern. Mr. Pezeshkian’s latest remarks indicate the possibility of reducing enriched uranium and allowing international verification.
