PM Tells UN: Repatriating Rohingyas to Myanmar Is Only Solution to Crisis
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly that the safe, dignified, and sustainable return of forcibly displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar is the only permanent solution to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Addressing the assembly in Bangla at the UN Headquarters on Thursday, September 24, he asserted that because the root causes of this protracted crisis originate in Myanmar, the ultimate resolution must also be achieved within its borders.
Highlighting the overwhelming burden on the host nation, the PM noted that Bangladesh has provided refuge to over 1.2 million forcibly displaced Rohingyas for more than nine years. Hosting such a massive population has exerted severe strain on the country’s national resources, fragile environment, domestic security, and local host communities. He urged the international community to take a firm role in facilitating a conducive environment inside Myanmar rather than allowing the crisis to linger indefinitely.
Reiterating Bangladesh’s position during his address, PM Tarique Rahman stated, ‘Bangladesh believes that the origin and root cause of the Rohingya crisis lie in Myanmar; therefore, the solution resides there as well.’ He further cautioned that a failure by global actors to deliver justice could trigger a far greater humanitarian catastrophe, warning all stakeholders that prolonged inaction risks destabilizing regional security and inflicting even deeper suffering on the displaced population.
To prevent further deterioration, the PM appealed directly to the United Nations and global partners to maintain uninterrupted life-saving humanitarian assistance until repatriation is successfully carried out. Continued international cooperation remains vital to guarantee essential food supplies, healthcare, physical security, and overall basic support for the shelter-seeking population. Earlier in New York, during a bilateral meeting with the UNHCR, he reaffirmed the absolute necessity of safe, voluntary, and dignified returns.
In his closing remarks, PM Tarique Rahman stressed that the Rohingya issue is not merely a localized challenge for Bangladesh, but an urgent global humanitarian and security responsibility. Calling upon all global partners to fulfill their collective commitments, he emphasized that a swift, effective, and lasting resolution is essential to securing justice for the displaced community and restoring long-term stability to the region.
