Trump-Xi Summit Leaves Key Issues Unresolved

US President Donald Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping a grand welcome at the White House. Despite the cordial atmosphere marked by official ceremonies, warm remarks and a state dinner, there were few signs of major progress on key issues such as trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence (AI), technology controls and the war in Iran. A Reuters report described the meeting as symbolically important but offering limited progress toward major policy solutions.
The two leaders held talks and attended a state dinner at the White House in Washington on Thursday (September 24). Before the meeting, the United States and China agreed to extend their existing trade truce by another two months. As a result, key issues including tariffs, Chinese purchases of US agricultural products, rare mineral supplies and US technology controls were left for the next round of talks.
Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi were joined by their wives at the state dinner. Several leading technology executives also attended, including Apple’s Tim Cook, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Tesla’s Elon Musk and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang. Outside the White House, protesters also chanted anti-China slogans.
At the dinner, Mr. Trump said that although the United States and China represent different political systems, ties between the two countries’ peoples have endured. He added that relations between him and Mr. Xi had never been better. Mr. Xi, meanwhile, said the interests of the two countries are deeply interconnected and that their competition should be healthy. He also expressed hope that Chinese companies would receive fair treatment in the United States and called for stronger regular communication between the two militaries and mechanisms for managing crises.
On the Taiwan issue, Mr. Xi urged the United States to take a cautious position. According to China’s state news agency, he called on Washington to handle the Taiwan question carefully and maintain its opposition to Taiwan independence. However, the White House did not issue a detailed summary of the issue after the meeting.
Meanwhile, differences between the two countries were also evident over the future of artificial intelligence. Mr. Xi said the two countries have the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good, ensure human control over the technology and use it for people’s well-being. However, no major new agreement on AI was announced.
The war in Iran was also discussed during the meeting. According to Reuters, there was no indication of any major change in Beijing’s position on US pressure on Iran. Mr. Xi called on the United States and Iran to return to dialogue and negotiations and expressed hope that they would ultimately reach a comprehensive agreement and achieve peace, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.
The overall atmosphere of the meeting was warm and highly formal. However, the key issues underlying the long-standing strategic competition between the two countries remain unresolved. Although the trade truce has been extended for now, differences over tariffs, rare minerals, technology export controls, Taiwan and AI have not been settled. Attention will therefore turn to the next round of negotiations following the leaders’ cordial exchanges.
