California Recognises Two Eids as Official Holidays

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha have been added to the list of official holidays in the US state of California. The recognition took effect after Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2017. The law came into effect on September 10, according to reports.
Under the new law, the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic lunar calendar is designated as Eid al-Fitr, while the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah is designated as Eid al-Adha. However, the recognition does not mean that all government offices, courts, schools or private institutions in California will be required to close on the two days.
Under the law, a student who is absent from school to observe Eid will be considered to have an excused absence. K-12 schools and community colleges may also decide to close on Eid based on local agreements.
In addition, state and school employees may use existing leave or personal holiday credits to observe Eid.
With this move, Eid has become part of California’s official holiday framework for the first time. The state has previously included various religious and cultural observances in its official holiday framework.
