President Urges Greater Chinese Investment and Support for Rohingya
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called upon China to expand its investment in Bangladesh while fostering a conducive environment for the safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya. He made this call during a farewell meeting with outgoing Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen at Bangabhaban today. Commending Beijing’s constructive role, the President noted that ongoing Chinese initiatives will prove vital to resolving the humanitarian crisis effectively.
The President urged China to scale up investments across key dynamic sectors, including ready-made garments, electric vehicles, light engineering, high-tech electronics, semiconductors, and solar energy. Welcoming multilateral connectivity plans like the Kunming-Chittagong Corridor and the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor, he stated, ‘Bangladesh stands ready to work with China and relevant partners for mutual benefit’. He emphasized that modernizing Mongla Port and establishing the Chinese Economic Zone are pivotal for regional growth.
Highlighting water resource management, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reiterated his call for Beijing’s technical and financial assistance regarding the Comprehensive Teesta River Management and Restoration Project, urging prompt advancement of implementation discussions. Describing China as a trusted friend and strategic partner, the President warmly appreciated Ambassador Yao Wen’s significant contributions to deepening ties throughout his tenure, wishing him continued success in future endeavors.
Reflecting on long-standing historical ties, the President recalled Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s visits to China in 1977 and 1980, as well as his own delegation visit in April 2026 alongside youth leaders and students. He stated that these historical engagements have deeply consolidated bilateral ties. Furthermore, he expressed gratitude for China financing the 1,000-bed Bangladesh-China Friendship General Hospital and sought technological cooperation for complex blood cancer treatments at CMH, which the envoy assured.
The high-profile diplomatic farewell at Bangabhaban was attended by the President’s Military Secretary, Secretary, Press Secretary, and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while Deputy Chief of Mission Dr. Liu Yuin accompanied Ambassador Yao Wen. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to elevating Bangladesh-China bilateral relations to higher levels, ensuring continued mutual progress, industrial development, and regional peace in the days ahead.
