Landslide on Dhaka Barishal highway raises fear of major accident

A large part of one side of the Dhaka Barishal highway has caved in, creating a serious risk in Gournadi upazila of Barishal. The damage lies midway between Bejgati and Sauder Khalpar. Soil and stones have washed away from under the road, and a section of the roadside has collapsed. Local resident Mr. Md. Dalim Molla fears a major accident could happen at any time.
A visit to the spot at 10 am the day before yesterday showed the collapsed roadside clearly. Soil and stones had slipped away from one side of the highway, and the edge had broken down. The damage makes it risky for vehicles to pass through that part of the road. Drivers now have to move with great care.
Countless vehicles use this important highway every day. If the authorities do not take the necessary steps quickly, the damaged spot could become dangerous for drivers. The risk is higher for those who drive at night. A vehicle could easily lose its balance at the broken edge in the dark.
The people concerned have therefore demanded quick repair of the damaged road to avoid a major accident. They have also asked the authorities to put up proper warning signs at the risky spot. Locals say these steps cannot wait.
